The Summit of Heads of State and Government of the European Union, Latin America and the Caribbean in Vienna on 12 May 2006 provides an opportunity to inform the Austrian public during the Austrian Presidency of the EU about a subcontinent which has a lot more to offer besides tango, samba and brilliant footballers. Latin America has great creative potential. Indigenous cultures, European and African immigrants and the influence of the United States have produced a cultural mix in Latin America that people in Europe also find attractive. All over Austria, cultural events focusing on Latin American and Caribbean music, art and literature are taking place and giving European audiences new insight into this part of the world.
You will find on these pages an overview of the programme organised by the private and the public sector. This presents current trends in the Latin American and Caribbean arts and cultural scene in Austria and is designed to arouse curiosity about the cultural links that exist between Austria and Latin America, of which often too little is known.
