School pupils debate Europe in the Café d'Europe

On Europe Day 2006, an open dialogue was held with school pupils and students in 27 cafés d'Europe in 27 countries.

The diversity and multi-faceted nature of Europe were also reflected in the students’ debate on Europe Day 2006. 100 school pupils and students were invited to the Café Central in Vienna to discuss with State Secretary Hans Winkler, Franz Schausberger, the chair of the Institute of the Regions of Europe, the writer Josef Winkler and the sponsors of the Café d'Europe, Karl Stoss, CEO of the Generali insurance group, Friedrich Stickler, head of the National Lottery and Josef Leutgeb, director of Casinos Austria, their visions of the future and of the kind of Europe in which they want to live.

Mobility, jobs, environment and the pace of enlargement were but some of the themes raised in the debate moderated by Barbara Rett.

The main emphasis was on dialogue. But readings, writing and culinary highlights were also on the menu in the Café d'Europe.

The writer Josef Winkler from Carinthia, invited by International PEN, read the text "Nur mit den Kernen der Apfelbutzen", the newspaper 'Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung' had produced the first European daily with contributions from 27 countries. The guests of the café d'Europe were invited to write their own personal story of Europe on the theme "Temptress Europe", or to submit it via email (info@cafeeurope.at).

Last but not least, Europe also presented its sweet side. The recipes for kolach from the Czech Republic, saktotis from Lithuania, French madeleines, apfeltorte from Luxembourg, Swedish kanebulle and Austrian gugelhupf are all to be found in the collection of recipes "Sweet Europe", a reminder of Europe Day 2006, available on request free of charge by calling 0800 22 11 11 (Monday - Friday, 8.00 to 18.00).
