Federal Chancellor Wolfgang Schüssel, President in office of the Council, will open the Rem Koolhaas Europe exhibition “The Image of Europe” on the Heldenplatz square in Vienna on Monday, 8 May.
The exhibition is housed in a tent decorated in the colours of the official logo of the Austrian Presidency. It will be open to visitors daily from 9.00 to 19.00 until 2 July. Entrance is free.
The exhibition is centred on two mural collages, which give an overview of the history of the European continent from the time of the dinosaurs to modern civilisation and present the history of the EU since the Second World War, as well as visions of the future of the Union. A special “EU passport” serves as a guide to the exhibition.
The Heldenplatz square in Vienna is the second station of this Europe exhibition, which was conceived by Rem Koolhaas with the help of his think tank AMO and has now been brought to Vienna for the Austrian Presidency.
In 2001 the Dutch designer Rem Koolhaas was invited by the then President of the European Commission, Romano Prodi, and the Belgian Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt, to prepare a visual presentation of Brussels, the newly proclaimed capital of Europe. A tent in the colours of all the flags of the EU countries was created, which also housed an exhibition on Europe in Brussels.
