At the Youth Ministers’ Informal in Bad Ischl, youth representatives from all over Europe presented a declaration drafted at the parallel Youth Event to Federal Minister Ursula Haubner and Ján Figel’, the Commissioner for Youth, Education and Culture. In this declaration, the representatives of Europe’s young people stress the importance of measures in the area of youth employment, non-formal and informal learning and youth participation. Minister Haubner, current President of the Youth Council, commented on the declaration at the subsequent press session. “This declaration very comprehensively and very concretely addresses a number of different areas. The content of the declaration shows that Europe’s youth is interested in good, professional solutions. There is interest in an effective partnership.”
Minister Haubner said the Youth Event and the declaration shows young people have a great need for information and want to be more actively involved. “They rightly call for a very open, structured dialogue, and not one that takes place only now and then.” According to the minister, there are positive signals that the European Commission wants to make improvements in this area together with the Member States. Another important theme raised by the youth representatives in the declaration is the recognition of non-formal learning. “The Austrian Presidency is preparing a resolution on the recognition of non-formal and informal learning for the Council meeting in May”, Haubner announced. The declaration also highlights the desire for greater job security. “What the young people want is the same as what I proposed in connection with the new pact for growth and jobs. Growth and employment in Europe can be achieved only in tandem with social security and corresponding social flanking conditions. We have a major responsibility here”, Haubner concluded.
