President of the European Council Wolfgang Schüssel on the ETA ceasefire and on EU relations with Lebanon

At the closing press conference of the EU summit, the President of the European Council Wolfgang Schüssel commented on ETA's announced ceasefire. “The Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero informed us yesterday that ETA has announced a permanent ceasefire. We support the Spanish government in its efforts to find a solution to this enduring conflict. We hope this really is the beginning of the end of the last European terror organisation.”

Schüssel gave the following statement on EU relations with Lebanon: “The European Union regards its contacts with the President of Lebanon's Council of Ministers, Fouad Siniora, as very important. The European Union underlines its solidarity with the people and with the government of Lebanon. We support the continuation of the national dialogue, which is constructive – the inital negotiations are in conformity with the UN Resolutions in the matter. We also support the International Investigation Commission on the assassination of the former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. We will take action together with our partners from the core group to prepare the 'conference of the friends of Lebanon' under the best possible conditions. We are prepared to support the economic and political reforms, the drafting of which will, we hope, be speedily completed by the Lebanese Prime Minister.”
