“We’re talking about jobs, education, training and equal opportunities for our young people. The Union must aim to find every young person work or training within six months by the year 2007 and within 100 days by the year 2010. This involves the active implementation of the European Youth Pact, because young people need perspectives!" the President of the Youth Council, Ursula Haubner, said today in Brussels.
Haubner expects to see the social aims incorporated into the conclusions of the European Council. “Growth and employment can only function in tandem with greater social security for people. The European economic model can only remain a success and showcase project if economic, employment and social policy mutually strengthen each other. The Union must strive even further to make social inclusion and social protection their goal”, Haubner stressed today in Brussels.
Combating poverty and social exclusion is an important contribution to the social dimension. In this context, particular focus should be placed on avoiding and reducing child poverty in order to guarantee equal opportunities for all children, regardless of social background. “Poverty should not be a given, and the Union must, in the interest of equal opportunity, make it possible for the socially weak in particular to have work" stated Haubner at the talks with the social partners and representatives of civil society in Brussels, which took place in a very constructive atmosphere.
