In a letter of condolence to the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik strongly condemned the brutal murder of Russian diplomats in Bagdad and expressed her deep sorrow and her condolences to the families and colleagues of the victims as well as to the Government and the people of the Russian Federation.
“We deplore such shameful terrorist acts, but they will not deter us from our support for the Iraqi people in the transition to a peaceful future in prosperity and security”, she said. "The European Union is prepared to continue its commitment to the new Iraqi government and to the people of Iraq, and to support them in their quest for peace, stability and prosperity in an independent, united Iraq.”
At the European Council of 15-16 June, the EU reiterated its utter condemnation of terrorist attacks and deplored the continuing violence against the Iraqi people and the constitutionally elected government. "The EU – together with international partners, in particular the Russian Federation – will continue to support the newly formed government of national unity and the process of national reconciliation in Iraq", Plassnik declared.
