Plassnik thanks Jessen-Petersen for his work in Kosovo

Foreign Minister meets with the departing head of the UN mission in Kosovo

"Two years ago Søren Jessen-Petersen took over as head of the UN mission in Kosovo during a very difficult phase and since then he has made a very decisive contribution to the stabilisation and development of Kosovo", Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik, President of the Council, said during her meeting with the departing head of the UN authority in Kosovo. Jessen-Petersen, who has headed UNMIK for two years, is stepping down from this post on 30 June.

Plassnik stressed that Søren Jessen-Petersen's great personal commitment and his thorough knowledge of the region had won him the respect and appreciation of the international community, but more especially also of the people of Kosovo. "I should like to thank him in particular for having constantly pursued the goal of a multi-ethnic Kosovo, so that all the inhabitants of Kosovo can live their lives in peace and dignity."

She said his successor’s chief task would now be to continue this work resolutely, and to prepare the transition of the UN administration to the international presence once the status of Kosovo had been determined. "The systematic implementation of European standards by Kosovo's institutions will be of particular significance for Kosovo's future in Europe, as will close cooperation with the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the status negotiations, President Martti Ahtisaari", Plassnik said.
