EU experts in Vienna discuss possibilities for improvement for SMEs

Conference on the "European Charter for Small Enterprises” in the Vienna Hofburg

SMEs — small and medium-sized enterprises — are the backbone of the European economy. Together with the European Commission (Directorate-General for Enterprise and Industry), Economics and Labour Minister Martin Bartenstein has therefore invited experts from all EU countries to a conference in Vienna on the "European Charter for Small Enterprises” in the framework of the Austrian Presidency. Representatives from the Mediterranean countries and from east and south-east Europe will also be attending for the first time. Around 350 delegates from all corporate policy areas are expected to be at the conference on Tuesday and Wednesday. They include Christoph Leitl, President of the Federal Economic Chamber, Egon Blum, representative of the Austrian government with responsibility for youth employment and education, Director-General Heinz Zourek from GD Enterprise and Industry of the European Commission and Deputy Director-General Françoise Le Bail of the same DG, special envoy for SMEs. Martin Bartenstein will give the opening address.

The main objective of the conference is to exchange best practices, which will be presented in the speeches and above all in workshops giving national examples. Planned subjects include:

  • Getting more out of the single market
  • Business support, especially for start-ups and business transfers
  • Experiences in facilitating small business development in the Mediterranean region
  • Successful e-business models
  • One-person enterprises
