Plassnik and Winkler to attend the General Affairs and External Relations Council in Luxembourg on Monday and Tuesday

 

Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik will attend the meeting of the General Affairs and External Relations Council of the European Union in her capacity as President, together with State Secretary Hans Winkler, on Monday 12 June and Tuesday 13 June 2006 in Luxembourg.

The General Affairs Council will be devoted to the subject of enlargement and preparing the European Council in Brussels on 15 and 16 June. Other topics on the agenda will be migration, the ongoing WTO negotiations and preparation of the EU-US Summit on 21 June in Vienna.

With regard to external relations, the foreign ministers will discuss developments concerning Iran’s nuclear programme in light of High Representative Solana’s recent offer in Teheran. The Council will also discuss the situation in Iraq and the Middle East and EU relations with the Western Balkans and Cuba.

Accession conferences with Turkey and Croatia are planned in the margins of the Council. The Stabilisation and Association Agreement with Albania will also be signed on Monday, with Prime Minister Sali Berisha and Commissioner Olli Rehn in attendance in addition to Foreign Minister Plassnik. The latter will also have a bilateral with her Iraqi counterpart Hoshiyar Zebari. Association Council meetings with Israel and Egypt will take place on Tuesday.

Hans Winkler will also attend the EU-EEA Council. The main items on the agenda for this meeting will be the functioning of the internal market, energy policy and a political dialogue on the Western Balkans, the Middle East and Darfur.
