Haubner brokers Council agreement on improved insurance cover for mobile workers

At the very outset, the Austrian Presidency set itself the goal of improving insurance cover. Today, companies send their workers to locations all over the EU. However, this mobility should not have a negative impact on employees’ health, accident and retirement insurance. At today’s formal meeting of the Employment, Social Policy, Health and Consumer Affairs Council in Luxembourg, its President Ursula Haubner was able to achieve significant progress. “We basically reached agreement on guaranteeing employees immediate assistance in the form of advance benefits and provisional insurance", Haubner explained. Up to now, employees have often had to wait a long time to get their insurance status clarified.

The new arrangements apply in particular to health, accident, retirement and unemployment insurance, family allowances and care benefits, and the coordination of health insurance for people on holiday. There is to be speedier (electronic) comparison of data between insurance schemes in the individual Member States. Mobility and flexibility with social security for employees, that was our starting point, and we have achieved a high degree of acceptance here today", Haubner said. At today’s last formal Council meeting chaired by Austria, backing was also given to the social dimension of the sustainability strategy and social services. The Austrian Presidency was thanked for its active commitment to giving the EU a social dimension again.
