In order to advance discussion and measures for the future, particularly in the field of family policy, the Federal Ministry of Social Security, Generations and Consumer Protection is issuing invitations to the high-level conference “Demographic Challenges – Family Needs Partnership” in Vienna from 2 to 4 February 2006 in the context of the Austrian EU Presidency. Among the main topics of this conference are the internal partnership of the family and the role of fathers, a subject for which preparatory work was already carried out at the “1st European Fathers’ Conference” in Vienna in September 2004, and partnership with the economy as preconditions for the compatibility of family and professional life. Another core theme of the conference will be dedicated to the subject of mobility and its effects on the compatibility of family and professional life.
Today Europe is experiencing demographic changes that are having far-reaching effects on the population and the advancement of the European Union. With the green paper “Confronting demographic change – a new solidarity between generations” and the high-level demographic conference in July 2005, the European Commission has initiated an EU-wide discussion in order to face the effects of demographic change and to guide the necessary reform measures. The importance of the demographic challenges for Europe was also affirmed at the informal meeting of Heads of State and Government in Hampton Court in October 2005.
