Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik, President of the Council of the European Union, expressed condolences to the Polish Foreign Minister Stefan Meller concerning the tragic accident at the Chorzów exhibition centre: "I was extremely shocked by the news of this tragic accident. I wish to express my deepest sympathy to you and to the Polish people as a whole on behalf of the Presidency of the European Union and on my own behalf at this time of great sorrow ", the Foreign Minister.
Foreign Minister Plassnik also asked Mr Meller to tell “the families and relatives of the victims of this terrible catastrophe, which has cost the lives of so many people, how much we share their pain and sorrow".
