On 26 January, the Austrian Federal Minister for Social Security, Generations and Consumer Protection and current President of the Council of the EU presented the Austrian Presidency’s programme for Consumer Protection. During her speech before the European Parliament’s Committee on Internal Market and Consumer Protection, the Minister stated: “It is crucial for our institutions to work in a constructive manner and in close cooperation so that the outstanding issues can be dealt with and solutions found.”
During its Presidency, Austria will continue its work on two important dossiers relating to consumer protection. First, there is the Community Action Programme in the field of health and consumer protection (2007-2013), the consolidation of which will be discussed. The need to guarantee the transparency of financial support and separate treatment of the two areas has always been stressed. "I am particularly concerned that, in this Community programme, more attention should be paid to the elderly and to disadvantaged consumer groups", Minister Haubner added.
The second priority will be the negotiations on the proposal for the Consumer Credit Directive. Minister Haubner stated that “The Presidency will do its utmost to find a compromise to ensure that international consumer credit products and services are on a par with the high standards of consumer protection. In this way, we shall be promoting the operation of the internal market”.
