Minister for Economics and Labour Martin Bartenstein is taking part today, Monday, as EU Presidency in the conference in the Charlemagne building in Brussels on the occasion of the launch of the European Year of Workers’ Mobility on the theme “Workers’ Mobility: a right, an option, an opportunity?” The conference is being chaired by Vladimir Špidla, European Commissioner for Employment and Social Affairs. In addition to Minister Bartenstein, opening addresses on the theme of "Mobility, a tool for more and better jobs" will be given by José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission, Jan Andersson, Chairman of the Employment and Social Affairs Committee of the European Parliament and Jeremy Rifkin, President of the Foundation for Economic Trends. There will be a press conference in the Charlemagne building (room S2) at 15.30 with Commission President Barroso, Commissioner Špidla and Council President Bartenstein. Bartenstein and Špidla will then hold a roundtable discussion with experts on the subject of "Free movement and the functioning of transitional measures".
This conference will provide an opportunity for the Commission and the Member States to discuss various aspects of the challenges facing mobility policy in the context of the Lisbon goals and thereby point up the topical significance of mobility. The theme of the conference sets the scene for the consultations and pilot measures during the Year of Mobility.
The new EURES job mobility portal, through which all of Europe’s citizens can have direct access to around one million job offers published by the public employment services, will also be officially launched at the conference.
The full conference programme is available here.
