Innovative labour market policy in a globalised economy

Austrian Presidency hosts EU high-level conference in the Vienna Hofburg – press conference on Friday

In the context of the Austrian Presidency, the Federal Ministry of Economics and Labour and the European Commission are holding an international conference on “Innovation in labour market policy – new challenges in the age of globalisation” in the Hofburg in Vienna on 16 and 17 February. Experts from all EU Member States will be welcomed by the President of the Council and Minister for Economics and Labour, Martin Bartenstein, the EU Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities, Vladimir Spidla, the Italian Minister for Employment and Social Affairs, Roberto Maroni, and the Irish Minister for Employment, Tony Killeen.

Today, a study on the future of employment and growth in Europe will be presented by Christopher Pissarides, Professor at the London School of Economics, and the OECD Employment Outlook 2005 by John Martin, Director for Employment, Labour and Social Affairs at the OECD. The two experts will then hold a discussion on the podium with Ministers Bartenstein and Killeen and Antonis Kastrissianakis, Director for Employment Strategy and ESF Policy Coordination at the European Commission.

On Friday morning, three parallel workshops dealing with specific case studies will be held: “Successful Organisational Forms of Labour Market Services”, “Encouraging Immigrants and Young People to Participate in the Labour Market” and “Experience with Promoting Low-Wage Earners”. After lunch, the three workshops will be reported on during a round table talk in the plenum. Brief statements from Minister Bartenstein, the Vice-Chairman of the Committee on Employment at the European Parliament, Thomas Mann, and Commissioner Spidla, as well as social partner statements from WKO President Leitl and OGB President Verzetnitsch, will lead on to a plenum discussion. Speeches by Mr Spidla and Mr Bartenstein will bring the conference to a close.

On 17 February at 11.00, Minister Bartenstein and Commissioner Spidla will hold a joint press conference in the Gardesalon at the Hofburg in order to inform the media about the proceedings and aims of the conference. Media representatives may also attend the round table talks on the same day from 13.00.

Only accredited media representatives will be allowed to attend Friday’s press conference and round table talks. Please register as soon as possible for last-minute accreditation.
