Chancellor Schüssel: Austria’s Presidency values teamwork

Austria’s Chancellor Wolfgang Schüssel, President in office of the Council of the EU, stressed the importance of subsidiarity in connection with the subsidiarity conference in St. Pölten, which is continuing today. He described it as a key issue of Austria’s Presidency.

“We are trying to provide very specific answers and solutions to public concerns and fears. The Union should not be part of the problem, but part of the solution, Schüssel said. Politicians had to listen to what the people were saying and should attempt to come up with concrete initiatives. For instance, worries about centralisation could be alleviated by an appropriate subsidiarity approach. The correct definition of the European social model could be an answer to concern about neoliberalism. “When people complain about over-regulation, a sensible solution can be better regulation. When we talk about the remoteness of the European institutions, the answer has to be that we as politicians must go to the public and enter into dialogue. Let’s go on the offensive”, Chancellor Schüssel declared.

“The Austrian Presidency wants to work as part of a team. As European institutions, we want to show an example of cooperation rather than confrontation, Schüssel concluded.
