Plassnik: No exemption from punishment for genocide

Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik signs an agreement with the International Criminal Court on behalf of the EU

Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik today signed an agreement on cooperation and assistance with the International Criminal Court on behalf of the EU. "The EU is the first regional organisation to sign such an agreement with the International Criminal Court. In signing this agreement, the EU has once again demonstrated its full support for the Court", she said.

"The International Criminal Court represents major progress in international law. Our common concern is to see genocide, crimes against humanity or war crimes internationally prosecuted and outlawed. The Court gives us for the first time an effective, lasting instrument to ensure that the perpetrators no longer go free, as has all too often been the case in the past. We are determined to work closely with the International Criminal Court; the signing of this agreement today is an important step in this direction", Plassnik declared.

Among other things, the agreement permits an exchange of information, testimony by EU officials and support for the Court from the EU in the form of personnel and resources. The agreement was signed on behalf of the International Criminal Court by its President, Mr Philippe Kirsch.
