The Presidency firmly rejects statements made by Belarusian Foreign Minister Martynov according to which the Union and the Embassies of Member States in Minsk would be held responsible for any violence that the Belarusian authorities might use against supporters of the opposition.
The Presidency also rejects Belarusian allegations about undue influence by the Union and its Member States on internal politics in Belarus. The European Union supports democratic processes, the promotion of human rights and political freedoms in general.
The Presidency has followed with increasing concern the steps taken by President Lukashenko and the Belarusian authorities in the run-up to the elections. The Presidency strongly condemns statements made by Belarusian officials threatening the application of anti-terrorist legislation against demonstrators exercising their democratic rights.
The Presidency stresses that the Belarusian authorities bear the full responsibility for any violence that might be used against demonstrators. The EU expects Belarus to adhere fully to its obligations and commitments as a Participating State of the OSCE, in particular with regard to the right of assembly and the freedom of expression.
