The Presidency of the European Union expresses deep concern regarding the forceful arrest of Belarusian presidential candidate Kozulin as well as a group of his supporters.
The EU expects Belarus to adhere fully to its obligations and commitments as member state of the OSCE and to assure a free, transparent and fair election process, safeguarding in particular the right of assembly and the freedom of expression. At the same time the personal security of all presidential candidates before, during and after the elections must be guaranteed.
In this context, the Presidency recalls the position of the European Union as expressed in the Council Conclusions of 7 November 2005 and 30 January 2006.
