Declaration from the Presidency on behalf of the European Union on presidential elections in Chile


 

The European Union extends its warm congratulations to President-elect Dr. Michelle Bachelet Jeria.

The European Union recognises the economic and social progress achieved under the Government of President Ricardo Lagos Escobar as well as its dedication to international cooperation and the advancement of democratic values.

The European Union looks forward to the continuation of its excellent cooperation and a further strengthening of its relations with Chile within the framework of the EU-Chile Association Agreement which has paved the way for a very privileged relationship.

The Acceding Countries Bulgaria and Romania, the Candidate Countries Turkey, Croatia* and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia*, the Countries of the Stabilisation and Association Process and potential candidates Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Montenegro, and the EFTA countries Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, members of the European Economic Area, as well as Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova align themselves with this declaration."

 

* Croatia and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia  continue to be part of the Stabilisation and Association Process.
