CFSP Statements

25.04.2006

Declaration by the Presidency on behalf of the European Union on the situation in Sri Lanka, with alignment of third countries of 27 April 2006

The EU utterly condemns the explosion which took place at the army headquarters in Colombo today. The EU sends its deepest condolences to the relatives of those killed and injured and to the Government and people of Sri Lanka for the tragic loss of life.

This appalling act of terrorism must not be allowed to threaten the prospects for peace in Sri Lanka.

We continue to support the Norwegian peace facilitators' determined efforts to achieve a further round of talks on strengthening the Ceasefire Agreement between the LTTE and the Government of Sri Lanka.

The EU calls on both the LTTE and the Government of Sri Lanka to refrain from further actions liable to jeopardise the peace process.

The Acceding Countries Bulgaria and Romania, the Candidate Countries Turkey, Croatia* and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia*, the Countries of the Stabilisation and Association Process and potential candidates Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Montenegro, and the EFTA country Liechtenstein, member of the European Economic Area, as well as Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova align themselves with this declaration.

* Croatia and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia continue to be part of the    Stabilisation and Association Process.
