Location:
Salzburg borders on Germany in the north and west. It also has a short border with Italy in the south-west. The River Salzach flows in a north-south direction through the province.
History:
Salzburg became an Archbishopric in 798 and extended its territory to the Southern Alps. In the 14th century it was finally separated from its Bavarian motherland.
It became a secular province in 1803 and the ecclesiastical principality was thus converted into a lay Electorate. Ferdinand IV became the feudal lord.
After a period of Bavarian rule from 1806, Salzburg was finally returned to Austria in 1815 by the Vienna Congress
