Mr Chairperson,
I have the honour to take the floor on behalf of the European Union, to make a few general remarks at the opening of this Fourth Session of the Intergovernmental Working Group on the Effective Implementation of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action.
The Acceding Countries Bulgaria and Romania, the Candidate Countries Turkey, Croatia and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia*, the Countries of the Stabilisation and Association Process and potential candidates Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Montenegro, as well as Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova align themselves with this declaration.
Mr Chairperson,
The European Union congratulates you on your re-appointment and the extensive preparation work and consultations that you have undertaken to prepare us for this session of the Working Group. We express once again our hope that this Working Group will produce concrete, realistic and constructive outcomes which will make a meaningful contribution to the fight against racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance. Mr Chairperson, we trust that under your guidance you will once again be able to steer us towards a consensual and constructive outcome.
We would also like to thank the High Commissioner for Human Rights for here commitment to helping the international community develop meaningful strategies to fighting the scourge of racism, which affects all our societies.
Mr Chairperson,
The European Union attaches the greatest importance to the fight against racial discrimination. The implementation of commitments undertaken at the 2001 Durban World Conference makes a significant contribution in this regard. Its is important that this Working Group do likewise.
Mr Chairperson, we note the agenda that has just been adopted and look forward to contributing to detailed discussions on all of these items. The European Union stands ready to contribute to a constructive Working Group.
